Survival of the hatchlings — Video-based ESL lesson
This 60-minute ESL lesson plan, designed for intermediate (B1-B2) learners, explores the perilous journey of sea turtle hatchlings as they race from their nests to the ocean. Using a transcript from a nature documentary, students will master vocabulary related to wildlife survival, predation, and environmental challenges. The lesson integrates listening, reading, and critical thinking skills, encouraging students to analyze how animals overcome overwhelming odds through timing and instinct.
ESL lesson plan: Survival of the hatchlings
- Level: Intermediate (B1-B2)
- Duration: 60 minutes
- Objective: Students will acquire vocabulary related to wildlife survival, practice identifying context clues in a transcript, and discuss the concept of “survival of the fittest.”
- Materials: Lesson transcript, whiteboard, vocabulary handouts, and writing journals. Get the transcript by clicking “more” under the description and then scrolling down and clicking “Show transcript”.
Warm-up (10 minutes)
Activity: Visualizing the journey
- Write the word “Odds” on the board. Ask students: “If the odds are against you, is it easy or hard to succeed?”
- Show a picture of a baby sea turtle (hatchling). Ask:
- What are the main dangers this animal faces?
- Who are its enemies on land? Who are its enemies in the water?
- Ask students to predict: “Is it better for these babies to hatch all at once or one by one?”
Vocabulary introduction (15 minutes)
Activity: Contextual discovery
Present the following 10 vocabulary words taken directly from the transcript:
- Stacked against (idiom): Having many disadvantages or difficulties making success unlikely.
- Hatchlings (n): Young animals that have recently emerged from an egg.
- Predators (n): Animals that hunt and kill others for food.
- Doomed (adj): Certain to fail, die, or be destroyed.
- Insatiable (adj): Impossible to satisfy (usually referring to hunger).
- Dash (n/v): A quick, sudden run or movement.
- Lair (n): A secret or private place where a wild animal lives.
- Drown (v): To die through submersion in and inhalation of water.
- Pounding (adj): Striking or hitting heavily and repeatedly.
- Surf (n): The mass of white bubbles and waves that break on the shore.
10 Additional expansion words:
- Vulnerable (adj): Exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed.
- Instinct (n): A natural impulse that moves an animal to a specific behavior.
- Dehydration (n): A dangerous lack of water in the body.
- Obstacle (n): Something that blocks one’s way or prevents progress.
- Camouflage (n): Disguise or coloring that helps an animal blend in.
- Navigate (v): To find the way to a specific destination.
- Succeed (v): To achieve a desired aim or result.
- Exhaustion (n): The state of being extremely tired.
- Coastal (adj): Located on or near the edge of the land by the sea.
- Perilous (adj): Full of danger or risk.
Listening/reading comprehension (15 minutes)
Activity: Transcript analysis
- Read the transcript aloud or play the video.
- Have students follow along with the text.
- Ask the following comprehension questions:
- Why are the “odds stacked against” the hatchlings? (Many predators like kites and crows are waiting).
- Why is it an advantage for many hatchlings to appear at the same time? (The predators can’t catch them all).
- What is the “last” hatchling’s strategy? (Struggling out late might give her a chance because predators are already full).
- What animal, other than a bird, tries to catch the hatchling? (A ghost crab).
- Once the hatchling reaches the water, is she safe? (No, she has to avoid drowning in the surf and face unknown dangers in the water).
Speaking practice (10 minutes)
Activity: Survival strategy debate
Divide students into small groups and discuss:
- In the video, the narrator says being late might give the hatchling a “chance.” Do you think it is better to be first or last in a dangerous situation?
- Humans don’t have natural predators like crows or crabs. What are the modern “obstacles” humans have to navigate to be successful?
- Use at least 3 new words (e.g., vulnerable, strategy, dash) in your discussion.
Writing practice (10 minutes)
Activity: The hatchling’s diary
Ask students to write a short paragraph (5-7 sentences) from the perspective of the baby turtle.
- Prompt: Describe your journey from the nest to the “calmer water.” Use at least 5 vocabulary words from the lesson (e.g., surf, predators, dash, perilous, hatchling).
Wrap-up (5 minutes)
Activity: Rapid-fire definitions
- Give a quick definition (e.g., “A place where a crab lives”) and have students shout out the word (Lair).
- Homework: Research one “survival strategy” of a different animal (like a lizard or a bird) and write three sentences explaining how it works using the word instinct.
